Russia should be attending a Group of Seven summit in Canada, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday.
“You know, whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run and the G7, which used to be the G8, they threw Russia out, they can let Russia come back in, because we should have Russia at the negotiating table,” Trump told reporters before leaving Washington.
Italy’s newly appointed Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte quickly followed, saying “I agree with President Donald J. Trump: Russia should return to the G8. It is in everyone’s interest,” he tweeted.
Russia was expelled from the Group of Eight in 2014, for disagreements over the Ukraine crisis. Since then, Russia hasn’t been eager to return, saying that it prefers other wider formats such as the G20.
