Dear friends and Russian community members of Seattle,
In partnership with the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral and Alutiiq Strategic Consulting LLC, the Russian-American Cooperation Initiative (RACI) is pleased to announce the official start of the renovation project for the Russian Orthodox Brotherly Cemetery of St. Nicholas located in the Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park.
As some of you may know, the cemetery was established in 1928, by the Russian Veterans Society of The World War (Gen. A. J. Elshin), in memory of the “Nicholas Aleksandrovich (Nicholas II), the Royal Family, the Great Martyrs, and millions of unknown warriors and Russian people who died for the faith of the Tsar and Fatherland.” Currently, the cemetery is under the purview of the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral.
This is a truly unique and special place for the Russian people as it continuously reminds us of “the life, feats, and greatness of our ancestors.” Unfortunately, throughout the decades the cemetery has been a subject to vandalism, damage from natural hazards, and simply aging.
At the request of the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral, our team began a planning process to restore this precious historical treasure. After several months of research and discussions with key stakeholders, we have recently been granted permission from the Evergreen Washelli Cemetery to begin the work. At this time we are finalizing the estimates and will start working on obtaining the necessary funds for this project. We project to complete the renovation work by no later than Summer 2019.
With this said, we will keep the community up to date on the progress and any support we may need to successfully accomplish this important task.
